Payment orchestration comparison

FloPay vs Chargebee

Chargebee brings subscription billing, invoicing, sales tax, revenue recognition, and payment retries together in one monetization platform that connects to the gateways you choose. FloPay focuses on the payment layer: an independent card vault that keeps saved cards portable, chargeback prevention that acts on early dispute alerts, and cascading that can send a declined card payment to another provider. Choose Chargebee when billing operations and pricing flexibility lead the brief, or FloPay when you want to own your cards and keep payments moving across providers.

Differences that matter

Independent Card Vault

Saved cards decide how freely you can change processors. FloPay keeps them in an independent card vault, so cards stay portable as you add or switch providers. Chargebee stores each card in the connected gateway's vault, or in Spreedly's vault for some gateway connections, and moving cards to a new gateway means a migration. Choose FloPay when changing processors should not start with a card migration.

Chargeback Prevention

The cheapest chargeback is the one that never becomes a formal dispute. FloPay acts on early dispute alerts and can refund automatically based on your rules, so avoidable disputes stop before they escalate. Chargebee documents fraud and dispute tooling: fraud alerts that combine IP monitoring with gateway tools such as Stripe Radar and Adyen RevenueProtect, chargeback management that can pause or cancel risky subscriptions, and, in Chargebee Pay for pre-qualified customers, fraud notifications and bank inquiries you can respond to. It does not document refunding automatically on early dispute alerts. Choose FloPay when stopping avoidable disputes before they reach your dispute rate matters most.

Multiple Card Providers / Cascading Processing

A declined card payment does not have to end the attempt. FloPay can retry the same declined card payment through another card provider, giving it a second route to approval. Chargebee connects multiple gateways, lets you set up backup gateways, routes by payment method and currency, and recovers failed payments through backup payment methods, Smart Dunning, and Revive. Its documentation says a saved payment method's future payments go through the gateway account linked to it, and it does not document cascading a declined payment to another processor. Choose FloPay when processor redundancy should work inside each payment attempt.

Automated Sales Tax Reporting

Chargebee has the advantage on automated sales tax. Integrations with tax engines such as Avalara, Anrok, and Vertex apply tax to Chargebee invoices and generate reports, and the Avalara integration keeps rates current and prepares tax payable by jurisdiction for filing returns. The Avalara integration requires a paid Avalara account. FloPay does not currently validate automated sales tax reporting, so choose Chargebee when tax calculation and filing reports belong inside your billing system.

Questions about FloPay and Chargebee

What is the main difference between FloPay and Chargebee?

Chargebee is a subscription billing and monetization platform covering pricing, invoicing, sales tax, revenue recognition, customer portals, and payment retries, connected to the gateways you choose. FloPay is payment orchestration built for control and resilience, with an independent card vault, chargeback prevention on early dispute alerts, and cascading across card providers. Choose Chargebee when billing operations lead the decision, or FloPay when owning your cards and keeping payments moving across providers matters most.

Can I move stored cards between processors with Chargebee?

Chargebee stores each card in the connected gateway's vault, or in Spreedly's vault for some gateway connections, so moving cards to a new gateway is a migration, run through the gateways, Chargebee's API, or Chargebee support. FloPay keeps saved cards in an independent card vault that stays portable across providers, so adding or changing processors does not start with a card migration.

How do FloPay and Chargebee handle a declined card payment?

Both products help you recover it. FloPay can retry the same declined card payment through another card provider, alongside smart routing and subscription recovery.

Does Chargebee help prevent chargebacks?

Chargebee documents fraud alerts that combine IP monitoring with gateway tools such as Stripe Radar and Adyen RevenueProtect, and chargeback management that can pause or cancel risky subscriptions. For pre-qualified customers, Chargebee Pay adds fraud screening, fraud notifications, and bank inquiries you can respond to. It does not document refunding automatically on early dispute alerts. FloPay's chargeback prevention acts on early dispute alerts and can refund automatically based on your rules, so avoidable disputes stop before they escalate.

Can Chargebee recover failed subscription payments?

Yes. Chargebee automates dunning with configurable retries, customer emails, and a final subscription status, can fall back to a backup payment method, and offers Revive, which uses machine learning on billing context to decide whether and when to retry each failed payment. FloPay also recovers failed subscription payments with dunning, so compare retry control, customer messaging, and whether a declined card payment can move to another provider.

Does Chargebee automate sales tax and revenue recognition?

Yes. Chargebee automates sales tax through tax engine integrations such as Avalara, Anrok, and Vertex, and the Avalara integration requires a paid Avalara account. Chargebee RevRec recognizes revenue across pricing models and automates the month-end close. FloPay includes revenue recognition and reporting but does not currently validate automated sales tax reporting.

What does Chargebee offer that FloPay does not?

Chargebee brings automated sales tax reporting, cart abandonment recovery with reminder emails, payment retries driven by machine learning, and 3DS 2.0 authentication across its 3DS-capable gateways. Chargebee Pay, available to pre-qualified Chargebee Billing customers, adds an automatic card updater and a published payout timeline. FloPay does not currently validate those capabilities, so weigh them against FloPay's independent vault, chargeback prevention, cascading, and network tokenization.

Does Chargebee publish its pricing?

Yes. Chargebee publishes Flow plan pricing by monthly invoicing volume, with an interactive estimate, and offers Enterprise pricing through a demo. FloPay also publishes clear pricing. Compare the total cost, including platform fees, payment processing, and any third-party tax engine you connect.

What does Not supported mean in this table?

It means we were unsure or unable to validate the complete capability from the Chargebee website. It does not mean the capability is unavailable. Every positive Chargebee row links to an official source, and you can use the discrepancy link if an official source should change a row.
