Payment orchestration comparison

FloPay vs Recurly

Recurly runs the whole subscriber lifecycle, from billing, dunning, and Intelligent Retries to Avalara-powered sales tax, Account Updater, Recurly Engage prompts, and revenue recognition, with payments orchestrated across multiple gateways. FloPay is built for payment orchestration. When an issuer declines a card payment, FloPay validates cascading processing across card providers, while Recurly's gateway failover switches to a backup gateway only when it detects an outage. Choose Recurly to run billing, tax, and retention in one platform, or FloPay when payment resilience across card providers comes first.

CapabilityFloPayRecurlyEvidence and notes
Independent Card VaultValidatedValidatedView official source

Because Recurly stores customer card data, merchants can switch payment gateways at any time, provided the new gateway supports the same card types and currencies. Tokenized payment instruments may not migrate as easily.

Subscription Recovery / DunningValidatedValidatedView official source

Recurly's dunning campaigns control failed-payment emails, retry timing, and what happens if a subscriber never pays. Dunning is available on all plans.

Chargeback PreventionValidatedValidatedView official source

Through Recurly's Justt integration, which the Recurly account team activates, Justt intercepts disputes through RDR and CDRN, where available, before they become formal chargebacks.

Multiple Card Providers / Cascading ProcessingValidatedNot supportedView official source

Recurly supports multiple gateways and automatically fails over to a backup gateway when it detects an outage on the primary one. Automatically cascading an issuer-declined card payment to another card provider is not documented.

Smart Routing / Failover ProtectionValidatedValidatedView official source

Recurly tracks gateway error responses, fails over to a backup gateway when error velocity signals an outage, and reverts once the primary gateway recovers. Gateway Failover is not included in Recurly's Starter plan.

Dynamic Payment SelectionValidatedValidatedView official source

Recurly Checkout detects the customer's location and adjusts the language and recommended payment method automatically. Checkout is available on all plans.

Local / Alternative Payment MethodsValidatedValidatedView official source

Recurly supports cards, digital wallets, direct debit schemes, and local payment methods across Latin America, Europe, and Asia, each available through specific gateways.

SDK / API DocumentationValidatedValidatedView official source

Recurly publishes its API v3 reference, official client libraries for several languages, and native iOS and Android SDKs.

No-Code IntegrationsValidatedValidatedView official source

Recurly maintains pre-built integrations with payment processors and CRM, ERP, BI, and tax applications that merchants can use without tapping into development resources.

Hosted Payment PagesValidatedValidatedView official source

Recurly Checkout is a PCI-compliant checkout that Recurly hosts on its own domain or the merchant's custom domain, with configurable styles and cart contents. It is available on all plans.

Clear & Transparent PricingValidatedValidatedView official source

Recurly publishes a monthly price, a billing-volume fee, and included features for its Starter plan. Its All-Access plan is quote-based.

Automated Sales Tax ReportingNot supportedValidatedView official source

Recurly's built-in tax, powered by Avalara, calculates sales tax, VAT, and GST on invoices and reports line-item tax through an export. Tax filing requires the merchant's own Avalara AvaTax or Vertex account.

Cart Abandonment / RecoveryNot supportedValidatedView official source

The Recurly Engage Abandon Cart use case detects returning visitors who left items in their cart and prompts them to complete checkout.

AI Payment Monitoring and/or OptimizationNot supportedValidatedView official source

Intelligent Retries uses machine learning to time retries of declined recurring card payments. It is not included in Recurly's Starter plan.

MID OnboardingNot supportedNot supportedNo official source published.

Recurly connects to the merchant's own payment gateway and merchant account. Merchants can apply for a Check Commerce account through Recurly, but that gateway accepts ACH only, so card MID onboarding is not documented.

Company Formation SupportNot supportedNot supportedNo official source published.
Multi-Currency / FX SupportValidatedValidatedView official source

Recurly helps merchants accept payments in customers' local currencies, with the available currencies depending on the payment gateway.

Network TokenizationValidatedValidatedView official source

Recurly supports card-network tokens alongside gateway tokens. Network tokens are not bound to one gateway, so they work across gateways for failover and subscription migration.

Automatic Card UpdaterNot supportedValidatedView official source

Account Updater refreshes stored Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover card details through the card networks' update programs. It is not included in Recurly's Starter plan and carries an additional cost.

PCI DSS Compliance LevelValidatedValidatedView official source

Recurly states that its platform is PCI DSS Level 1 compliant and recognized on the Visa Global Registry of Service Providers.

3DS2 / Fraud Rules EngineNot supportedValidatedView official source

Recurly.js adds PSD2-compliant 3D Secure 2 authentication to checkout on gateways that Recurly supports for 3DS2, such as Braintree, Cybersource, Worldpay, and Adyen.

Settlement / Payout SpeedNot supportedNot supportedView official source

Settlement runs through the merchant's own acquirer. Once a transaction is approved, the merchant bank settles it and transfers the funds, minus fees, to the business bank account, so payout timing sits outside Recurly.

Customer Self-Service PortalValidatedValidatedView official source

Hosted Account Management gives subscribers a branded portal to update billing details, retrieve past invoices, and manage or cancel their subscriptions. It is available on all plans.

Revenue Recognition & ReportingValidatedValidatedView official source

Recurly RevRec, which Recurly also sells as a standalone product, automates ASC 606 and IFRS 15 revenue recognition with revenue reporting and forecasting.

Sandbox / Test EnvironmentValidatedValidatedView official source

Recurly provides a full-featured sandbox for building and testing plans, gateways, and dunning settings before going live.

Differences that matter

Multiple Card Providers / Cascading Processing

A backup gateway protects you during an outage. Cascading gives a declined payment another route. FloPay validates cascading processing across multiple card providers. Recurly orchestrates payments across multiple gateways and fails over to a backup gateway when it detects an outage. For declined renewals, it retries the same payment method with Intelligent Retries and can switch to a backup payment method the subscriber has stored. Recurly does not document automatically cascading a declined card payment to another card provider. Choose FloPay when a declined card payment should be able to try another card provider.

Automated Sales Tax Reporting

Recurly has the edge on sales tax. Its built-in tax, powered by Avalara and available on all Recurly plans, calculates sales tax, VAT, and GST on invoices and provides line-item tax reporting through an export. Filing and specialized tax reports require the merchant's own Avalara AvaTax or Vertex account. FloPay does not currently validate automated sales tax reporting. Choose Recurly when tax calculation should live inside your billing platform.

Questions about FloPay and Recurly

What is the main difference between FloPay and Recurly?

Recurly is a subscription management platform that covers billing, dunning, retention, sales tax, and revenue recognition, with payments orchestrated across multiple gateways. FloPay is built for payment orchestration. The two products share most of the capabilities in this comparison. The clearest FloPay difference is cascading processing across card providers when an issuer declines. Recurly offers several capabilities that FloPay does not currently validate, including automated sales tax, cart abandonment recovery, AI-timed payment retries, and an automatic card updater.

Which product is built for payment orchestration?

FloPay is built for payment orchestration, with cascading processing across card providers, smart routing with failover, and an independent card vault. Recurly also offers payments orchestration: its quote-based All-Access plan lists orchestration across multiple gateways, and its documentation covers gateway failover, merchant-directed gateway routing, and network tokens that work across gateways. The difference shows up when an issuer declines, because FloPay validates cascading to another card provider, while Recurly does not document an automatic cascade.

Can Recurly retry a declined payment on another processor?

Recurly recovers declined renewals in several ways. Intelligent Retries uses machine learning to retry the same payment method at a better time, and Backup Payment Method switches a declined renewal in dunning to another payment method the subscriber has stored and agreed to use. Gateway Failover moves traffic to a backup gateway when Recurly detects an outage, and Custom Gateway Routing lets merchants direct a transaction or invoice to a specific gateway through the API. Recurly does not document automatically cascading an issuer-declined card payment to another card provider, which FloPay validates.

Can stored cards move between gateways with either platform?

Yes, in different ways. Recurly stores customer card data itself, so merchants can switch payment gateways at any time, provided the new gateway supports the same card types and currencies. Tokenized payment instruments may not migrate as easily, and Recurly also supports card-network tokens that work across gateways. FloPay validates an independent card vault and network tokenization, keeping stored credentials portable as you add or change card providers.

Does Recurly handle sales tax and revenue recognition?

Yes. Recurly's built-in tax, powered by Avalara and available on all plans, calculates sales tax, VAT, and GST on invoices, with line-item tax reporting through an export. Filing requires the merchant's own Avalara AvaTax or Vertex account. Recurly RevRec, which Recurly also sells as a standalone product, automates ASC 606 and IFRS 15 revenue recognition. FloPay validates revenue recognition and reporting but does not currently validate automated sales tax reporting.

Which Recurly features depend on partners or higher plans?

Several do. Dispute interception through RDR and CDRN comes from Justt, which the Recurly account team activates, and tax filing needs the merchant's own Avalara AvaTax or Vertex account. Gateway Failover, Intelligent Retries, Account Updater, and Backup Payment Method are not included in Recurly's Starter plan, and Account Updater and the Wallet feature behind Backup Payment Method carry additional costs. Recurly's pricing page lists payments orchestration across multiple gateways, intelligent churn-prevention tools, and multicurrency under its quote-based All-Access plan. Recurly Engage, which runs the abandoned-cart prompts, is a separate product.

How do FloPay and Recurly compare for developers and security teams?

Both validate SDK and API documentation, hosted checkout, network tokenization, PCI DSS Level 1 compliance, and a sandbox. Recurly publishes its API v3 reference, official client libraries, and native iOS and Android SDKs, and its sandbox lets teams test plans, gateways, and dunning settings before going live. Recurly also supports 3D Secure 2 authentication through Recurly.js, while FloPay does not currently validate the combined 3DS2 and fraud rules criterion. Compare integration effort, compliance scope, and fraud tooling before choosing.

What does Not supported mean in this table?

Not supported covers two cases: the Recurly website rules the capability out, or we were unsure or unable to validate it from the Recurly website. It does not always mean the capability is unavailable. Every positive Recurly row links to an official Recurly source. If an official Recurly page shows that a row should change, use the discrepancy link and we will review it.
